"Cymbeline" Trailer

Some of the Snow White-like motifs will be clear. All of Shakespeare's Cymbeline should be obvious, what with the script pretty much following the Bard's (and they do it a LOT better than I expected). Not really my type of movie but I will be watching what people say about it and how it's discussed.

Fairy tales seem to get related to everything these days/weeks (and with no additional help from me!). In Cymbeline they wouldn't be stretching the idea too far, of course, but I'm curious to see just which ones they cite as having parallels. If Snow White doesn't come up you can then assume fairy tales are just the current hot-button-scapegoat for unveiling the darkness in us all... (insert ridiculous evil laugh here). But hey - at least they're open to discussing our favorite subject!

If you're interested in Shakespeare, seeing his work translated into modern  or are curious about the Snow White motifs in the play (which will have to be there in the movie to some extent since they're following the book so closely) then you might want to keep your eye on this film too.

Take a look at the trailer. It looks better than the poster implies and we might even be getting a glimpse of Imogen's death-like sleep. Or is it sleep-like death? Depends on the story you're telling I suppose... :

New "Cinderella" Trailer: Not Just About the Magic

As promised, released today, here's the new, second official trailer for Disney's live action Cinderella.

We finally get to see a little more of the driving force behind this retelling as well as a little more of the transformation magic.

Perhaps I'm extra critical because Branagh is a Shakespeare and classics guy who should be well aware of layering, stories, use of symbology and plot points etc so I expect more than average but this trailer is definitely a step in the right direction, even if it still doesn't feel particularly innovative to me at this point. There does seem a chance that people will think slightly differently of Cinderella in the future though but we'll have to wait and see.

Note: Cinderella is going to be EVERYWHERE. The last few days have been filled with announcement upon announcement from various stores and chains collaborating with Disney to handle Cinderella-specific merchandise. You will not be able to escape this during Springtime. It's definitely being boosted by the new Frozen short, Frozen Fever, being included before the movie but the longevity of the Cinderella merch. will depend on a variety of things. Suffice it to say - if you want fairy tale themed clothes, accessories etc now is a good time to start looking around.

In the meantime, enjoy the trailer! It's worth watching to see where they're going with this:

Glass Slippers & Conspiracies

Remember how I mentioned I hadn't seen anything regarding marketing of an iconic Cinderella shoe as a marketing/consumer tie-in to the upcoming movie (and that I wouldn't have been surprised if it ended up being an exclusive thing)?

Ta da! Disney has approached nine luxury shoe designer brands and asked them for their interpretations of a Cinderella 2015 shoe.

(In other words, they went the exclusive route.)

The distinguished designers, in alphabetical order, are: Paul Andrew, Alexandre Birman, René Caovilla, Jimmy Choo, Salvatore Ferragamo, Nicholas Kirkwood, Charlotte Olympia, Jerome C. Rousseau, and Stuart Weitzman. Each brand has created its own interpretation of the famed glass slipper Cinderella accidentally leaves behind when the clock strikes midnight.
...Swarovski, which produced the iconic glass slipper for the film under the direction of Academy Award®-winning costume designer Sandy Powell, provided the crystals featured in the designers’ shoes.

The words: PVC, perspex, transparent - these all make me think of ugly, squished, sweaty and deformed feet (especially in these heels! Are any under 3 1/2 inches??) Yikes. Feet can be very beautiful but, ironically, this combination seems a conspiracy against that ideal..

You can see the rest of the shoe designs HERE (none of which seem particularly innovative, but what do I know), along with statements from the designers about creating a new iconic Cinderella shoe. The rest of write up from Consumer Products is HERE, including a list of where you're able to order these shoes, if you are so monied, er, inclined. (!)

In other Cinderella movie updates, there is a new TV Spot, focusing on an apparent conspiracy the Stepmother is "in" on, with regard to keeping Cinderella hidden and apparently there's a new full trailer due out tomorrow.

Here's the conspiracy:
I want to be excited, I do, but it's not feeling very unique - not even a different spin on a classic (and fairy tale writers out there know there are many, many ways to do that, even when restricted by using required/classic/iconic material). I know Branagh did his research. I know he read many versions of Cinderella in preparation for making this movie but I'm not seeing lots of evidence of that yet. Cinderella "pre-meeting" the prince so it's not love at first sight has been done so often (heck, Disney made sure this happened for Snow White so she'd have a little history with her guy before being woken up!), I just can't see it as being a different take (Ever After easily did it better and that was a very less-than-perfect movie.)

But... this little featurette came out today about the love story between Cinderella and the Prince so, for people who've never seen Ever After or The Slipper and the Rose (highly recommended) this may feel very fresh.

Without doubt, whatever it is, it will be beautiful.

Discussing the "Pan" Teaser Trailer: Are Our Children's Stories Adaptations Getting Too Grown Up?

This trailer has been out for a while. I just never got the chance to post it (or discuss it). There haven't been any new ones yet that I've seen, despite the release date closing in. I have to wonder if they're not rethinking a few things...

Before I discuss, here's the trailer:
I'm not sure how I feel about this adaptation, and I'm not talking about the casting, (cough-Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily??-cough).

In my mind neither Pan nor Tink are exactly sweet (they're actually a little frightening in some ways) but the rest of Neverland and the surrounding story by Barry are more "light-childhood magic" than using dark, looming adolescent themes. I think that's an important aspect of the Peter Pan story, particularly as it deals with the joys of childhood (which might be nice to see an example of, since that's barely acknowledged anymore in any child shown in the media that's over five years old, though true childhood extends far longer) and why you might not want to grow up.

In case you're not aware, this is a prequel to Barry's classic, how Peter became Pan, so you'd think it would be focused on the POV of a child, but this trailer isn't telling me that at all.

I think this is perhaps my main problem with making all adaptations "dark". Mostly, they're not truly adult versions but instead they teeter on that YA/New Adult precipice where everything is uncertain and generally not quite as straightforwardly free and joyful as children's storytelling and tales, yet these versions also aren't layered enough to properly explore the raised issues.

There's no doubt our culture is youth-skewed, but with a specific YA focus still being dominant in both TV series and novels, children aren't getting much of a chance to be "real and as naive as they should be children" either. Children's entertainment these days seems largely to talk down to children, or is so filled with "educational value" so that there isn't that escape into the imagination that children need and crave, where they can explore and learn on their own. Instead, ironically in this case of a Peter Pan interpretation, they're encouraged to "grow up".

As a parent whose son is just the right age to introduce to wonderful worlds of live action fantasy and imagination with a little (but not too much) danger, I'm finding a lot of modern movies just aren't up to the task and I'm having to hunt down DVD transfers of much older classics. What's missing in children's movies at the moment is straight forward (fairy) tales that allow the child/person to enjoy and take them at face value but also have enough layering (yet not too much explanation and detail to make it so specific) that allows a stretching of the imagination and new understandings of themes when the child is ready to go there.

One thing is certain: this version of Peter Pan isn't going to address that issue at all. It's going for that elusive pre-teen male demographic that's so hard to attract. But I'm not certain it's hitting the mark there either. Just look at the posters. Not a single smile or overall joyful palette of color. Where is the humor, the sense of fun, the role play? The magicis "serious" and Neverland does't really look like somewhere a kid would want to stay...

Thoughts?

Note: Pan is set to open in theaters on July 24th.

Gans' "La Belle et La Bête" With English Subtitles/Dubbing? Yes Please!

It still doesn't look like the US or UK have a version we can easily watch (yet!)  BUT Amazon Canada finally has a French version with English subtitles available for pre-order! Yay! (Thank you Anonymous for the tip!)

Before you rush to order though, remember that there will likely be regional restrictions, so unless your player can handle all regions, triple check before spending your hard-earned money.

For those lucky individuals who are fluent in French there are many more choices available:
1) DVD and Blu-ray French only track and subtitles
and
2) this amazing, limited edition and very gorgeous looking package show at the head of the post and more details below:

Blu-Ray + DVD + Bonus BluRay72 page book of unpublished concept artCommentary by Christophe Gans (Director)Commentary by Louis Morin (Visual Effects Supervisor)Multi-angle feature - Raw film without VFX, storyboards, rough VFX, final movie83 minute making of documentaryDeleted scenes with introduction from Christophe GansYoann Fréget 'Sauras-tu m'aimer' music video
Yep. I want it. I don't care if my French is so rusty I can barely ask for directions anymore - I would dearly love to have this special edition in my library!

The US Amazon site has a lovely packaging picture but a prominent, in red. "Currently unavailable" with no information about a release yet.

One very good sign, however, is that this English-subtitled trailer was released just a week ago. Although it may not be the best looking English subtitling, it's still a big step in an encouraging direction for English-only speakers who have been dying to see this (and actually understand what's being said).

And then this has surfaced as well (get ready Belle et la Bete fans - this is very likely what it will look like when we finally get to see it);

If I get any more tips on a version of this movie being released thats' English audience friendly (with English subtitles at least), I'll be sure to pass them along.

Fairy tale bonus of the day:
Here's an image collection of all the various international posters Pathé films have produced for the movie. The one English one has a date of October 2, though I don't know what that means, or what region/country it's for. It may just take a while to get proper international distribution across the globe, so with an official English poster out there, it does send hope that there will be an English-friendly version available at some point.

Hello New Year, Hello New Cinderella Trailer

Well, whaddayaknow? Midnight does change everything.

Happy NewYear!

Wishing you a tale-filled year
(all of which have happily ever afters)
bringing joy, wonder
and magic of the very best kind.

Pause for effect... (Or is that the champagne? Ahem.)

And now the news:

I don't know about you, but I didn't have a hope of catching the new Cinderella #midnight sneak peek that aired last night. But Disney have been kind enough to upload the new trailer today as a little New Year's gift to of all us in that predicament (#guessingmostpeople) andit is:
*Aside: Isn't it great to be starting the year with fairy tale news that's, well, in the news? I'm going to take that as a very good sign for a fairy tale-filled year.*

Hopefully most of my readers have been better able to keep up with fairy tale news and happenings the past five months or so than I have, but for those who've had normal life get in the way (and are very behind, like me), I thought I'd add these new-ish posters for the upcoming movie as a little New Years Day bonus.

What do you think? They're a little too staged and self-aware for my preference but most everything else about this direct-from-animation-adaptation is looking fairly promising to me.

As far as I can tell, public reaction is extremely positive and the overall sense is excited anticipation for this movie. And that's a good thing for fairy tale folk.

New Year?
Check.
Happy?
Check.
Let the magic continue!

Almost Midnight... And A Sneak Peek of Things To Come

A sneak peek at the "eleventh hour" of 2014...

...but not just at the upcoming live-action Cinderella. (Although I'd be remiss if I didn't post this:)

Today's last-post-of-2014 is really to let you know that the cogs of Once Upon A Blog are turning again and that, despite more than a bit of rust (here and on your Fairy Tale News Hound) that you WILL be getting daily* fairy tale news again very shortly...

Just like this, from Stitch Kingdom today:
Walt Disney Studios has announced via a teaser video (embedded below) that shortly before midnight ET on New Year’s Eve 2014, it will be sharing a brand new exclusive look at its upcoming film Cinderella (March 13, 2015), the live-action adaptation of the classic Disney animated film. The sneak peek will air during ‘Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve’ on the ABC television network.
Here's the official "Countdown to #Midnight" teaser just released:

The fairy tale continues in 2015 and Once Upon A Blog will be with you as it does. #insertwildcheering

And we will continue to bring news from many other fairy tales and fairy tale happenings around the globe, just like we always have. #missionstatement

For tonight, watch for magic and have a very
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

* Or as close to it as possible - 2014 has not been kind and we are still living with it's wake. Your support as we do our best in this is greatly appreciated!

1st Official Trailer: "Into The Woods"

Ta da! Andit is:

My first thoughts are mostly positive, especially considering my (and many others') fears. Glad to see they're continuing the trend of customizing the view of the Disney castle for the film.

How about you?

Song of the Sea Gets It's First Real Trailer!

The official poster, not yet properly released but on display in the offices at Cartoon Saloon
We've been looking at the conceptual trailer for this selkie movie a couple of years now (at least) but a real, honest-to-goodness teaser trailer means one very important thing: it's almost here! And boy is it GORGEOUS!

The teaser is only a minute but it's so beautiful and artful. Take a look:
Here's the description if you missed it before:
SONG OF THE SEA tells the story of Ben and his little sister Saoirse -- the last Seal-child -- who embark on a fantastic journey across a fading world of ancient legend and magic in an attempt to return to their home by the sea. The film takes inspiration from the mythological Selkies of Irish folklore, who live as seals in the sea but become humans on land. SONG OF THE SEA features the voices of Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan, David Rawle, Lisa Hannigan, Pat Shortt, Jon Kenny, Lucy O'Connell, Liam Hourican and Kevin Swierszsz. Music is by composer Bruno Coulais and Irish band Kíla, both of whom previously collaborated on The Secret of Kells.
No word yet on how GKids will be distributing this in the US - how widely or when - but it's hpappening and it'll be showing in theaters before the end of the year (in some places). Images are also starting to be released internationally as it's being picked up around the world for distribution. When I see dates, I'll let you know.

In the meantime, have some eye candy:

"Cinderella" Live Action Movie Teaser Trailer Released

OK so it's more of a music preview video with a shoe. But the response so far today has been CRAZY! One glass slipper and people are nuts.

(And people ask why Disney keeps making Cinderella.)

Anyway, enjoy the shoe!
Disney's live action Cinderella is slated for release in March, 2015.

OK Disney MARCH. That's NEXT year. What about this year's Into the Woods. Can't we even have a poster yet?

Also: Did that butterfly just DIE??! OMG no! :(

Parody of Sofia Coppola's "The Little Mermaid" is Pretty Much Perfect

Yes, it's not even filmed yet, but that's kind of the point.
It’s got all of the Coppola quirks: the indie soundtrack, the drunken karaoke, and of course, the Chateau Marmont. Actually, that’s “Shellteau” Marmont. See you if you can spot the rest. (Source)
It should be noted, this is not meant to disparage Ms. Coppola's work in any way. She's brilliant and amazing. She also has a definable style and that's what is fun to play around with when "predicting" how this live action version of The Little Mermaid could go.  If anything, it's a loving homage disguised as a spoof by Funny or Die.

Personally, I think she's going to have more fun with the fantastic aspects and hit the history more, especially because she's not remaking the Disney film (like they are here) but going back to Andersen's version, but this approach would be fun to see as well.

Admit it, you'd watch this too.
(AnnaSophia Robb is the actress playing the part of Ariel.)

By the way, if you like the main song (Kara Leslie, The Strokes cover of "I'll Try Anything Once"), you can hear and download the extended version of it HERE.

I'd kind of love it, if this song was ultimately included in the Coppola soundtrack for the movie.

OUAT: The Ice Queen (press release - no spoilers) & "GALAVANT" Is the Bridge For How We Get There (TRAILER ALERT!)

Hi Elsa! (And probably Anna too.) This is your official welcome by ABC to the world of Storybrooke, Maine and the Once Upon A Time fandom:

By the way, I've been seeing complaints (and occasionally outrage) that there are "so many people" getting upset that ABC is doing the Frozen version of Elsa instead of The Snow Queen. I just gotta say.... well that's interesting! (And it's not from me.) While I'd personally love to see a little traditional fairy tale Ice Maiden/Snow Queen input, it's pretty clear that OUAT's format and popularity relies upon using known fairy tale characters (usually, but not always, from the Disney canon) in order for the twists in their stories to have so much impact, so, of course it's going to be Elsa from Frozen. I'm very curious to know where all these "fairy tale hipsters"(their term, not mine) causing such a ruckus are from. Although I think it's a little misguided because of what the show essentially is, I kinda love that they're making fans of OUAT and Frozen take somewhat of a look at the old tales, even if it's only to note that they exist.

The other main beef on the interwebs today? That Dreamworks owns the Jack Frost character that a huge portion of the (various) fandoms want to 'ship with Elsa (who is Disney) - and the tears of despair that there is no way that can possibly happen because Dreamworks/Disney = mortal enemies. O.o
Elsa & Jack cosplay by Akatsuki Tsukasa
(click this to see more amazing cosplay including with Anna)
We're so far out from how they're going to manage this yet... I'm just going to say it: let it go, people!  (Don't kill me. )If you're a fan, odds are you will love what they do, if for no other reason than apparently the writer room is like a Frozen mini-fandom and cares just as much as you do. Chill. (And please don't kill me.)

Worried about how you're going to last that long? Enter Galavant (the musical comedy fairy tale show I've posted on HERE as being in development at Disney).
But before it gets too boring to keep reading, look! A crazy, fun, Princess-Bride-meets-Monty-Pythonesque trailer (but with less dirt) to show you we're very unlikely to be bored while we wait... From the writer of Crazy, Stupid, Love and Oscar-Winning Composer Alan Menken… ABC brings you… um, this:
This is so much better than expected. I'm heaving a huge sigh of relief. (And I'm going to take it as an excellent sign that my kid thought it was funny too.)

And yes, it makes complete sense that Galavant would be the bridge show for Oncers. We also know that this time they're not going to screw up the between season programming for this show either, after what happened with OUATinWonderland (for OUATinW it was a mid-season kafuffle, but still, cancellation is a serious price to pay for an oops).

So: fairy tale shows from ABC for the next year at the least. Woot!

(Note: Fairy tale writers: got an ice maiden or Jack Frost story bubbling away? This is the year to get it out there. Just sayin'.)

"Into the Woods Trailer" Surfaces (& People Get Excited, Even Though We're Pretty Sure It's Fan Made...)

Into the Woods by Charles Vess
The real question is, are they on target for a Christmas 2014 release? It's already (nearly) mid-May, which means we're about six months out and so far... nothing!

This trailer here, with the not-fantastic text and the weird lighting etc is looking.. less-than-Disney, ie it looks fan-made (please say it is because, although it's fine for a demo it's not looking very pro.) More telling, this appeared at the very end of April and there hasn't been a blip of news or comment about it since....

Here's the trailer though, and you can make up your own mind about it. Apparently it's still fooled a lot of people but Disney will be doing much better than this (we sincerely hope!).
Meryl Streep is the Witch in ''Into The Woods'' from Walt Disney Pictures. See the musical like you have never seen it before.
Walt Disney Studios, the studio behind "Frozen" and "The Muppets", presents "Into the Woods", a stunning big-screen comedic musical adventure. When the Baker and his wife (James Corden and Emily Blunt) discover they have been put under a curse from the Witch (Meryl Streep) rendering them forever childless, they embark on a life changing adventure into the woods to seek out special items needed to lift the curse. The cow as white as milk belonging to a poor village boy named Jack (Daniel Huttlestone) looking to sell his milk-less cow, the cape as red as blood belonging to a courageous and blood thirsty little Red Riding hood (Lilla Crawford), the hair as yellow as corn from atop the head of a lonely and outcasted Rapunzel (Mackenzie Mauzy) and finally the shoe as pure as gold having fallen from a distressed Cinderella's (Anna Kendrick) foot. With giants abound and where Big Bad Wolves (Johnny Depp) become the hunted, love and betrayal will the Baker and his wife ever be able to lift the curse on their family?
Into the Woods by Walt Disney Productions brings a hilarious new spin on an already existing musical classic.
The film is directed by Rob Marshall ("Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides", "Nine") and produced by John DeLuca, Marc Platt ("Winter's Tale", "2 Guns"). Featuring music from Stephen Sondheim ("Sweeney Todd", "Sunday in the Park with George")
"Into the Woods" comes to theaters in 3D on Christmas 2014.
What do you think?

3 New (& Wildly Different) "Maleficent" Promos With Lots of New Footage

It's Maleficent month! And the ramp-up to the release is expected to intensify.

Already we have three new official promo trailers released but they're not necessarily what you might expect.

The first, and least favorite of mine, has some odd sort of animation included at the beginning (animation that's NOT from the classic) and the voice over is female, but neither Maleficent or Aurora. There's a teensy bit of new footagethat might still interest though:
And the second, which is possibly my favorite, seems to bean exclusive to some show, and includes an interview with Angelina Jolie, in which she talks about Diaval, her (literal) wingman. This shows us quite a bit more:
(My son says her smile looks like Harley Quinn's. He may not be far off on that parallel to some degree!)

The third is a little behind-the-scenes peek at some of Aurora's scenes with a brief commentary by Elle Fanning, talking about the movie, the classic and her playing the role of Sleeping Beauty:
Here's a little more behind-the-scenes info from Elle Fanning in an interview she had with CoverMedia (I believe) in which she says she relates a lot to Sleeping Beauty. Excerpts that might interest fairy tale folk are below:
Q: You’ve taken this role very seriously, this Disney princess?
FANNING: A little bit just because I know there are so many fans of the animated movie and I don’t want to let them down; I want to do it the right way. This is the first film they ever did with Sleeping Beauty played by a person so before I started filming I went and I watched the animated movie again just because I wanted to. She has a very specific gait; her posture is very good and has little hand motions and I wanted to be sure I incorporated it in the same way that she walks and holds her dress so I tried to bring that into my version of Sleeping Beauty.

Q: What does it mean to you to play a character that represents beauty?
FANNING: It was very exciting. Also I felt that hers is a type of beauty that is a natural beauty; she is not making herself up, she’s not doing her hair or putting lipstick on. She lives out in a cottage with her three aunties who take care of her; they make her dresses so she has her own clothes, her hair is down other than maybe she puts some flowers in it. And yeah, during the filming I wore a wig but it wasn’t much make up. It very natural and so I liked that I was kind of representing natural beauty instead of an all done up kind of beauty.

Q: How much do you identify with her?
FANNING: I do identify with her. I guess a lot in some ways but in other ways I don’t at all. There’s one scene where she is probably the most pure and innocent princess just because she is trapped away and when she meets the prince for the first time she has never seen a male before in her life because she is so cut off. I think her curiosity comes through. I have always wanted to learn things and I try to find everything I can and absorb all I can and in that way we are alike. She wants to learn about everything.

Q: How is the relationship between Maleficent and Aurora?
FANNING: It’s different. Our story is Sleeping beauty and it has all the iconic images that you think off when you think of the animated film but there is a lot more to it; all the questions that you have when you are watching the animated film are pretty much answered in Maleficent. And also you get to see Maleficent and Aurora together a lot in the movie. All my scenes are basically with Angelina and in the animated film they are never together. You just see her when she curses at the christening so you get to see that.
You can read the whole interview HERE.

Although I do love seeing new footage and finding out more information I do hope the movie has a lot of reveals yet to come...

And I want a making of and behind-the-scenes book, with tons of info on the fairy tale research each department underwent please!
